I’ve lived in Transcona almost my entire life. When I was growing up, it seemed to me like the only things between Plessis and Lagimodiere were Transcona Dodge, the Starlite Drive-in and Park Pontiac (wicked!).

Since then a lot has changed! The Regent Avenue strip has filled up with over a dozen automobile dealerships, plus countless restaurants and shops, and even Manitoba’s largest casino.

Kildonan Place shopping district has evolved into the second-largest collection of retail spaces in Winnipeg. The Mission Gardens residential development has expanded and expanded again over the past 40 years.

The very latest developments in the area have continued this amazing growth. The new Transcona Public Library at the corner of Plessis and Transcona Boulevard will have its grand opening on March 7 at 10 a.m. This 13,500 square-foot library is double the space of the current library and has large windows and loads of natural light.

Across the boulevard in the Park City Commons development, Pizza Hut, A&W, Shell and Starbucks have already opened. Coming soon to the same location will be a  NoFrills, KFC, Pet Planet, Rexall and Dollarama.

That’s all on top of the hundreds of apartments, condominiums, side-by-sides, and single-family dwellings that have popped up around Peguis and Transcona Boulevard over the past few years. More and more homes are continuing to be constructed with seemingly no end in sight!

All these new homes come, of course, with new residents and new students for area schools. I have been in regular contact with the River East Transcona School Division trustees and the principals of Joseph Teres School and Bernie Wolfe Community School. Just last month, I was pleased to announce funding for some renovations to Joseph Teres school. I also recently got to see first-hand the work being done at Bernie Wolfe Community School to create functional classroom spaces out of what was very large open areas. The result should be more effective classroom environments for both students and teachers.

I am excited to be able to serve this dynamic and fast-growing part of our city.  While growth has its challenges, it also come with rewards.

I’m pleased to see these new developments making Transcona better than it’s ever been.
